We all know about male bashing on television. Sadly, there is a similar bias in mental health research. This video give a quick glimpse into three studies which show this anti-male bias. We have all grown to trust “research” and when we hear that a study shows that “X is correct” we tend to automatically believe that “X” is correct. Research has taken on an almost divine ethos that carries the seal of approval of correctness. If science says it, it must be so. The problem of course is that science, especially social science, is less than concrete and is much more slippery than measuring a distance or the tensile strength of a bar of steel. Mental health research is much more vulnerable to values and ideologies of the researchers. If a scientist believes a certain thing it usually has little impact on his measurements of the tensile strength of the bar of steel. No matter what he believes the measurement will likely be the same. But what about issues in social sciences where researchers come to the table with a large amount of preconceived ideas, allegiances to ideologies that espouse strong opinions about those being studied or have traumatic life histories that bias them against certain groups? Can those sorts of things influence the “findings” of a social science study? You bet they can. Gone is the impartial judge weighing the evidence and sifting through the data to find the truth. In today’s world of social science research the opposite is happening: researchers are …

The problem here is that misandry sells, so long as misandry is a profitable industry, harsh generalizations such as these will not go away.
What we need to do is strike misandry at the power structure, finding a way to no longer make it profitable. Once that happens, charities and other culprits behind this will lose interest in misandry as quickly as a car salesman loses interest in a customer with bad credit.
@1menaregood1
You’re a great person for doing this.
The way in which you deal with this subject in such an organized, compelling and temperate style makes the information -which is an utter revelation for some- very digestable.
Honey for the medicine, so to speak.
@knowthingman Thanks for the feedback. Please do offer it to your class and let us know how it goes. Send me a message if I can help out somehow. You might also want to have a look at the article linked at the bottom of the information box of this vid. It goes into much greater detail.
excellent vid. we need more critical expository HONEST investigation like this. do you think i should present this in my womens studies class? i wonder how it would be received?
@loqutor It’s not a yes or no thing, it’s a 6 point scale. As for the question, that’s not exactly sexist as both males and females are asked the question, and both males and females can be feminists.
Having just checked the online version, with no answers differing but the one you pointed out, the weight of a 0 answer compared to a 5 answer is 0.45 with gradations of 0.09 for each step between 0 and 5. It does not have a huge overall effect, especially as men and women could agree or disagree.
@theatheistguy Disagreeing with the statement “feminists are making perfectly reasonable demands of men” will increase your hostile sexism score.
@loqutor Care to point out the supposedly obvious sexism that I, with my self-hating male bias, missed?
@theatheistguy You read the questions, and you didn’t see the sexism in them? I’m afraid you’re beyond my help. Either that, or you have an anti-male bias yourself that you refuse to acknowledge. I’m guessing it’s a combination of the two.
@loqutor Taken a look at this, even done an online quiz version of it, I’m not sure what exactly you’re problem is with it. The questions have been posed to men and women around the world (in one study over 15,000 people from 25 countries) and they tend to show that both men and women hold to certain benevolent and hostile sexism, that there is little gender difference in benevolent sexism but men tend to score higher on hostile sexism. The conclusion isnt that men are evil, nor is it falsified.
@1menaregood1 I’ve asked for examples, not generalities, which by the way, I do not see, but I ask again to be pointed in the direction of any I may have missed.
By the way, there are many articles and studies into the oversight of men, specifically young men, when it comes to public policy on depression, suicide, mental illness, eating disorders, abuse (sexual, physical, mental, spousal, domestic, etc) and is the reason there are now more awareness campaigns and organisations for young men.
@theatheistguy Have a look at the academic journals that focus on men and those that focus on women. Just look at the titles of the articles and what do you see? The women’s titles are all about how women are victims and need support in their struggle for equality. Then have a look at the titles for the men and notice the marked difference. They are all about how men, um white men, have been the evil oppressor and need to learn to be more like women. Then read the articles and it gets worse.
@theatheistguy The Ambivalent Sexism Inventory.
@loqutor As a psychology student I have better access than most to psychology resources, if you would be so gracious as to point me in the direction of these supposedly biased text books and papers against men (I can’t recall any).
If you’re referring to pop psych (and as you also refer to youtube as a source, I believe you might be) then I feel I should point out that this is very different from any serious field of scientific psychology, for example, we don’t tend to like Freud any more.
@theatheistguy And who do you think it was who gave the information to the reporters? There’s a lot of evidence besides this for the bias against men and boys in mental health. Just look at all the books in the Psychology section with titles revolving around men who hate and women who love. Or look up “The Psychology of Hate” here on YouTube.
You just seem uncomfortable with the idea of somebody daring to say that a scientist did something wrong. Not too surprising nowadays.
RAGE
Great clip! Feminism has gone way — WAY — out of line in our society. I wonder when more people, and men especially, will wake up from this nightmare and say “no more”. Keep up the excellent work!
@1menaregood1 I did indeed see the video, and although you never come out and say one way or the other, it is in fact your ideology that comes out very strongly, with your hmming and hinting at things.
I have no problem with my views being challenged, a welcome it actually, if I wanted to be surrounded by people who all agree with me, I doubt I’d have watched your video, never mind engaged you in conversation.
These people included the facts in their papers, it was the media that twisted them.
@theatheistguy Maybe you didn’t see the video? The video is about what the researchers DID and leaves it up to the viewer to decide about intentions. It seems that your ideology is being threatened. Perhaps you need to develop some more compassion for boys and men.
@1menaregood1 You have no way of knowing what their intentions were. Are you going to say that people publishing studies on climate change and vaccinations are trying to push that climate change doesn’t happen and vaccinations don’t work, because that’s what the media took from their studies (even though their papers said the complete opposite)?
I hope you understand that 500 characters is not enough room to respond to a paper and your analysis of it, but I think I responded to the jist above.
@theatheistguy The researchers are well aware of the “candy store” mentality of the press and are obviously using that to promote their ideological agenda. Read the bias.pdf file that is linked in the info box. It will give you much more detail about how they are intentionally telling only half the story. Be sure to look at the section on the Straus paper that describes 7 ways that feminist researchers have used “research” to spread misinformation. It is an eye opener.
@1menaregood1 The press are never really good at understanding science, they tend to grab the first thing they see (or more accurately, the first thing they see that will sell) and run with that. This can be seen in everything from climate change, to vaccines, to alternative ‘medicine’, psychology and pretty much every field actually.
Although the lack of response is from the first authors is unfortunate, and indeed a tad suspicious, but you still cannot say one way or another.
@theatheistguy Yes, I mispoke about the 1 in 16. Interesting aside is that 1 in 16 girls were reported to have been raped but what was not discussed or shared with the media was that 1 in 29 boys was raped. Hmmm mention one and make it headlines and the other, well, just throw it away. lol
Yes, the video makes the point that the original data had plenty to show that boys were victims. Problem was their original data didn’t make it to the exec summary or the press release. 1/2 the story.
Mass media is not Mental Health or Psychological research. You read the research and it very clearly shows that they included these statistics.
Also, I hope you just misspoke at the 2min mark, as 1 in 6 girls said they’d been pressured into sex, and one in 16 had been raped.
@saxonhaste Good that Rand rings a bell! Her “Atlas Shrugged” was ranked by the U.S. Library of Congress as the most influential, non-Leftist, book in America, 2nd only 2 the Bible. I suggest going to aynrand[dot]org —correct the [.] part— & read whatever challenges.
If you disagree, look 4 more from Rand & her student academics. Doubt her detractors 2! Scary often, you’ll find your doubts were Improperly founded , that Rand or her academics had a brilliant principle others missed.
@RnBramwell
it wrings a bell would you be able to send a link?
